Day of Silence March

In the 7th installment of democracy it is! we focus on what it takes to make a difference in a democratic society and the relationship between power & privilege.

Wright School - Wrong SpeedStudents attending Wright Middle School dodge cars to cross one of the busiest thoroughfares in Madison, Wisconsin. By organizing, becoming activists, holding protest marches, and meeting with the people who have the power to make changes, the youth at Wright Middle School hope to make getting to school safer for everyone.

Fighting Corporate TobaccoThe youth in F.A.C.T. have dedicated themselves to working against the tobacco industries by joining together and getting active. With Fight Against Corporate Tobacco, these youth have made public service announcements, hosted rallies, held protests and created a Web site dedicated to recruiting young people before they start smoking in order to bring an end to youth smoking once and for all.

Day of Silence“Stop! This is why we need a GSA!” Members of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin’s Gay/Straight Alliance for Safe Schools tape this message under every meeting notice because someone keeps ripping them off the wall. Using silence as a civil disobedience tactic, members of GSA’s across the nation refuse to speak for 24 hours for those who feel it is never safe to speak out about who they are.
